Stay Hydrated This Weekend

The forecast for this weekend is sunny with high heat and humidity.  If you plan to spend time outdoors, make sure to bring along a water bottle.  The human body is composed of about 60% water, and staying hydrated is fundamental to overall health. During summer, when perspiration rates are higher, the need for water increases.  The FDA recommends that men drink about 3 liters of water a day and, women, 2 liters of water, but this amount can vary depending on activity levels and individual needs.

In addition to drinking water, consuming foods with high water content, like fruits and vegetables, can contribute to overall hydration. Watermelon, cucumber, and oranges are excellent choices that provide hydration and essential nutrients. Electrolyte-rich drinks can also be beneficial, especially after intense physical activities, to replenish lost minerals like sodium and potassium.

It’s important to recognize the signs of dehydration early (thirst, dry mouth, fatigue or dizziness) and take proactive steps to stay hydrated.  Besides carrying a water bottle, setting hydration reminders and avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can be dehydrating, are practical measures.

Given the hot weather forecast, you might want to plan some time indoors.  You could take in a movie, go shopping or, perhaps, treat yourself to a massage!  Whatever you do, either inside or out, stay healthy!
